Distinguished Invited University Professor Sumio Iijima was awarded the 2008 Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, for his discovery of carbon nanotubes, materials made from carbon atoms, in 1991.
The Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research is bestowed upon the individual, work group or institution whose discoveries or research represent a significant contribution to the progress of humanity in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Earth and Space Sciences, as well as their related technical aspects and technologies. Awards will be presented in the autumn in Oviedo at a grand ceremony chaired by H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias. |
